01The Brazilian R
At the start of a word, the Brazilian R is a soft H. Rio sounds like Hiu, not Ree-oh. Most learners use the hard English R, and it is the first thing that gives them away.
02The LH sound
LH is one sound, made with the tongue flat against the roof of your mouth. Filho is not fil-yo, it is a single melted sound. English has no equivalent, so the mouth has to learn a new shape.
03The vanishing final L
At the end of a word the L turns into a U. Brasil sounds like Braziu, not Bra-zil. Say the L like an English L and every Brazilian hears the foreigner in one word.
